Program Outcome Goals (1 through 8)

Clinical Competency Statements & Artifact Evidence

8 Outcome Areas
Outcome Goal 1

PMI will recruit and train individuals whose abilities, interests, work attitudes and practices are well-suited for the dental hygiene profession

Artifact Evidence & Statements

Artifact 1: PMI Acceptance Letter

Artifact Statement: Receiving my acceptance letter to Pima’s Dental Hygiene program was a major turning point in both my career and my life. Pursuing a career in dental hygiene has been a long-standing goal of mine, and this opportunity came at the right time after gaining 16 years of valuable experience as a dental assistant. My years as a dental assistant provided me with a strong foundation in clinical skills and patient care while also validating my passion for the dental profession. Entering the dental hygiene program has given me the opportunity to build upon that experience and take the next step toward becoming a dental hygienist.

Artifact 2: Volunteering PRIOR to DH program

Artifact Statement: Participating in Mission Mattawa was a meaningful experience that gave me a new perspective on community service and access to dental care. As a dental assisting student, volunteering with the dental team allowed me to apply the skills I was learning while serving individuals who may not have had regular access to dental care. Working alongside Dr. Lee and the rest of the dental team showed me the importance of meeting patients where they are and providing care without judgment. I also learned that oral health education is an important part of providing comprehensive care, especially for patients who may face barriers to accessing dental services. Looking back on this experience, I recognize how it influenced my desire to pursue dental hygiene one day and the importance of serving the community. It reminded me that being a dental hygienist is not only about providing clinical care but also about educating, advocating for, and helping improve the oral health of others.

Outcome Goal 2

Graduates will strive to employ ethical and professional standards consistent with the American Dental Hygienists’ Association Code of Ethics and the State and Federal laws that govern the practice of dental hygiene.

Artifact Evidence & Statements

Artifact 1: Reflection on ADHA Code of Ethics and its purpose to the profession/society

Artifact Statement: The “ADHA Code of Ethics Assignment” was beneficial because it allowed me to reflect on my personal understanding of ethical practice while exploring the purpose of a professional code of ethics and the fundamental principles outlined in the dental hygiene profession’s Code of Ethics. Through this assignment, I gained a deeper understanding of how ethical principles guide professional decision making and influence the way dental hygienists interact with and care for their patients. After developing a deeper insight of the ADHA Code of Ethics, I was pleased to recognize that my personal values and beliefs closely align with the ethical principles of the profession. This assignment reinforced the importance of maintaining integrity, respect, and accountability as I continue to develop my professional identity as a dental hygienist.

Outcome Goal 3

Graduates will provide comprehensive, individualized, and effective evidence-based dental hygiene care utilizing assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation in patient care for diverse populations.

Artifact Evidence & Statements

Artifact 1: Research Paper: The Unseen Challenges of Cancer Survivorship

Artifact Statement: Researching and writing “The Unseen Challenges of Cancer Survivorship” was more than an academic assignment; it provided me with an insight and an understanding of the unexpected challenges individuals may face when managing health or dental conditions. This experience taught me that, as a future dental hygienist and healthcare provider, it is important to recognize that each patient’s circumstances and barriers to care are unique. Patients may face challenges that are not immediately visible, and these barriers can significantly affect their ability to access and maintain their health. This research reinforced the importance of approaching every patient with compassion, empathy, and an open mind. I believe every patient deserves to be treated with respect, receive equitable care, and feel supported throughout their dental experience.
